CIA agent Joe tries to balance her personal and professional lives as the spearhead of the agency’s war on terror. Real military advisors helped to make the gun handling, house cleaning, positioning, team activities, etc. more authentic. Mr. Sheridan knows how to introduce us to a testosterone-fueled macho world without clichés and, apparently, without hidden agendas.
It is what it is. His characters are always grounded and he is extremely skilled at choosing roles. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script has to be as good, if not better, than the male one. The guys are simple.
The women are smarter, more complex. Beth in Yellowstone (great character and acting), the barrel riders, the single woman working on the ranch (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit naturally into the world of the story. Not just ‘partner…’ or T&A. He upped his game with a great performance by Faith Hill who smashed ‘1883’ and then Dame Mirren in the underdog ‘1923’. Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best work of her career.
I absolutely adore her as the CIA chief in an open marriage (a nice touch). I adore De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning anger who refuses to give up, and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her destroy her brother-in-arms with an extra hundred pounds of muscle. I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out or just beaten to the ground before she gives up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner, or should I say her hair? What a plot twist!
From cute Hallmarks to super-tough Special Forces? Honorable mention: Mrs. Lanier as the mean teenage daughter. I look forward to the portrayal presented for this loose canon, as long as they stay away from the clichés of teenage angst. Good actor, could be interesting…
